In Spain, entrepreneurial activity by women has increased in the past year and the distance from men in this regard has reduced. However, the female presence in the technological sector still registers low figures.

The Santander WomenNOW Summit aims to open the discussion on female innovation, entrepreneurship and technology at a time in which therate of entrepreneurial activity in Spain (known as TEA)-which measures initiatives that have been on the market for less than 3.5 years-, has increased a percentile point from the previous year (from 5.2% to 6.2%) according to data from the most recent Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Report on Spain 2017-18.

For Alicia Richart, managing Director of DigitalES, the Spanish Association for Digitalisation and one of the participants at the Santander WomenNow Summit, in Spain the digital and technological sector has low rates of female participation and the trend is for it to continue as so. Richart believes that “in Spain there is a problem recruiting talent. We need to attract women to these types of studies and improve the educational focus”.

The expert thinks that the inequality in the digital sector“has an economic cost that we cannot allow”. And this inequality also contributes to the fact that women have still not managed to break the sector’s “glass ceiling”.
